Summer Pet Safety: Keeping Your Pets Cool in Cambodia's Heat
Cambodia's heat can be dangerous for pets. Learn how to spot heatstroke, keep your animals cool, and avoid common warm-weather risks.
Summer Pet Safety: Keeping Your Pets Cool in Cambodia's Heat
Cambodia's tropical climate means hot season temperatures regularly exceed 35°C, sometimes hitting 40°C. While we can adjust our clothing and seek air conditioning, our pets rely on us to keep them safe.
Understanding Heat Risk
Dogs and cats don't sweat like humans. Dogs cool down primarily through panting, and cats through grooming (saliva evaporation). Neither method is very efficient in high humidity — which Cambodia has in abundance.
High-risk breeds:
- Flat-faced (brachycephalic) dogs: Bulldogs, Pugs, Shih Tzus, Boxers
- Thick-coated breeds: Huskies, Golden Retrievers, Chow Chows
- Senior and very young animals
- Overweight pets
- Cats with flat faces: Persians, Exotic Shorthairs
Signs of Heatstroke
Heatstroke can be fatal. Know the signs:
- Excessive, heavy panting
- Drooling more than usual
- Red or pale gums
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Stumbling or disorientation
- Collapse or unresponsiveness
If you suspect heatstroke: Move to shade or air conditioning immediately. Apply cool (not cold) water to their neck, armpits, and groin. Offer small amounts of water. Get to a vet urgently.
Prevention Tips
Exercise Smart
- Walk early morning (before 7 AM) or after sunset (after 6 PM)
- Test the pavement with your hand — if it's too hot for your palm for 5 seconds, it's too hot for paws
- Keep walks shorter during hot season
- Bring water on every walk
At Home
- Ensure constant access to fresh, cool water. Add ice cubes on the hottest days
- Provide shade if your pet is outdoors — and ideally, keep them indoors during peak heat (11 AM - 3 PM)
- A fan helps, but air conditioning is more effective for truly dangerous temperatures
- Cooling mats (gel-filled pads) give pets a cool surface to lie on
- Frozen treats: stuff a Kong toy with peanut butter and freeze it, or freeze low-sodium chicken broth into ice cubes
Never Do This
- Never leave a pet in a parked car — Interior temperatures can reach 60°C+ within minutes, even with windows cracked. This kills pets every year.
- Don't shave double-coated breeds — Their undercoat actually insulates against heat. Shaving can cause sunburn and disrupt their natural temperature regulation.
Water Safety
If your dog likes swimming (many Cambodian dogs cool off in ponds or pools):
- Supervise at all times
- Rinse off chlorine or pond water after swimming
- Ensure they can get out easily — provide a ramp or shallow exit
- Not all dogs are natural swimmers — introduce water gradually
- Watch for blue-green algae in stagnant water — it's toxic
Paw Protection
Hot pavement, sand, and metal surfaces can burn paw pads. Stick to grass or shaded paths during the day. If burns do occur (limping, licking paws, visible blisters), run cool water over the pads and see your vet.
The hot season is manageable with awareness and preparation. A little extra attention keeps your pets safe and comfortable all year round.
